EUNKYOUNG LEE is a composer and visual artist who uses glass as a visual language.
LEE played the piano at an early age, and majored in contemporary music composition, then gained a master's degree in information and communications.
LEE has built a career in various fields of the music industry, focusing on K-POP production, which led her to experience diverse areas.
During her music career, LEE often traveled back and forth between Korea and Japan thanks to the popularity of K-POP, also known as the 'Korean Wave(Hanryu)', and while visiting the Toyama area, she came across 'Glass'.
Glass was something that sparked LEE’s curiosity, something that she could not feel in other media, and this became an opportunity to expand the scope of her work from auditory to visual.
Just like LEE’s personal environment, she is interested in the direction of finding and harmonizing the connection points between objects that seem to have no contact at all.
In fact, LEE continues to work to add layers of thinking by observing the unique senses captured among the movement between heterogeneous environments through objects, shapes, and inherent customs within a space and examines them with the surrounding phenomena.
LEE's work is based on glass blowing where you can experience the change in glass properties in a single moment, and she has shown various types of work such as Installation, Painting, Sculpture, Sound, and Video.
With glass at the center, experiments are being conducted that do not limit expression techniques and methods.
LEE uses Glass as its original form or to deliver a message and handles Glass as if she composes Music.
LEEWAI 이와이 李和李 いわイ
LEEWAI is another name of Eunkyoung LEE.
In the process creating titles for her works, LEE began to think about the ‘Artist’s Name’ that is written along with the title of the work.
Instead of using the passively given name, LEE thought about creating a name for herself.
LEE finds connections between heterogeneous environments and sometimes expresses them differently in each environment, but in the end, LEE is at the center of it all.
Hence, LEE created a name that reflects the 'Overlapping Sequence' a keyword that encompasses her entire work.
The name that naturally came up in the world of LEE’s overall work is 'LEEWAI,‘ which she has been using since 2024 and hopes that the meaning of the name can resonate in more places.
(On a side note, working with a new name from 2024 feels like another beginning for LEE, as LEE's birthday is 0224.)
